Why ?
The Grand River Bass Derby is organized and run by volunteers from Natural Sports and the Optimist Club of Stanley Park. The main goal is to promote wholesome family fun, fishing on the greatest natural resource in Waterloo Region, the Grand River. It is also important to measure and draw attention to the quality of fishing, a direct indication of the overall health of the River. As well it recognizes the importance of public access and local fishing opportunities.
Why do we go by length not weight?
It is easier for most anglers to measure fish rather than weigh them. Individuals scales tend to be inconsistent. Angler's can measure their fish and easily determine whether to bring them in.
Why is there only one measuring station?
To ensure consistency in measurement there is only one official measuring station. Anglers that have taken the steps to care for their catch should have no problem bringing in their catch alive and well.
How many fish can I enter?
You can enter as many fish as you want as long as they are bigger than your previous entry. Participants can win only one prize ( plus draw prizes )
Where can I fish?
Fish may be caught in the Grand River only from below the Shand Dam at Belwood to above the dam in Paris.
When can I fish?
You can start fishing from 5 am Saturday until 3 pm Sunday afternoon. Keep in mind the measuring station is open from 7am to 9 pm Saturday and 7 am to 3pm Sunday.
What is the best way to keep the fish alive?
A large tub or cooler with as much water as possible and an aerator. Use only water from the river, do not use tap water. See Live Release Tips.
Why do we fill out the Creel Census Cards?
Data collected from past derbies is compared to annual results and the data contributes to an ongoing study. This data will assist in improving the overall fishery.
